Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) occurs when the uterus, bladder, urethra and/or bowel descend from their correct place in the pelvis and lower into, or even outside, the vagina or rectum due to insufficient muscular and fascial support. Symptoms include a sensation of pressure/bulging, difficulty with urination (e.g. difficulty starting the stream or completely emptying), or difficulty fully complete a bowel movement.
Strengthening the pelvic floor and core muscles, learning to manage increases in intra-abdominal pressure, and changes in toileting behavior often improve symptoms enough that surgery can be avoided. In addition, these exercises can offer immediate help with a number of related issues, including urinary incontinence. Research suggests that many people do not do ‘Kegels’ correctly. Your doctor will determine the best treatment plan for your symptoms and make sure you are correctly engaging your pelvic floor muscles.
